I never forget my mother is a strong woman. She came to America when she was 12 - old

enough to remember her language. She achieved scores and grades high enough to be admitted

to Duke University. With a degree in computer science, she finally became the manager of a

company in New York. My mother could give fluent speeches, saying "wolves" correctly.

It was my mother who always stressed the importance of language .From the time l was

born,1 was read to.1 would fall asleep to the sounds of my parents' voices, whether it was my

dad's softly accented, or my mother's clear English. The flow of language was unbroken, and

whether in Chinese or English, the stream of communication flowed through our house.

One October morning in the sixth grade, after my mother had left to catch the train to the

city ,I left the house for the bus stop.1 was surprised when I saw our car, the door hanging

stroke中风 had created a wall between my mother's mind and mouth; her mind was not any

less clear, but the words she said were not what she meant. . .'

The battle my mother faced taught me the importance of language. Without it, identity

does not exist; relationships cannot be formed; stories cannot be told; directions cannot be

given, and knowing anything about anyone is impossible. Without language, communication

cannot take place. Without language, one cannot express the beauty of a sunset or the kindness

of a stranger. The world would pass us by in silence. .

Our pets have moved several times and usually the moves are across the country or even to

a new country. This means we normally fly them and have. over the years, come up with some

tips on how to ensure they arrive safely.'

If you haven't decided yet on how best to move your pets, I usually think about which

situation will be less stressful. Keep in mind that when you fly pets and are not flying with

them, that is, they won't be on the same flight as you, your pets must be checked in at cargo

托运货物处 at least three hours before departure time. Add this time to die flight time, plus

another hour at the destination to have them released from cargo. Sometimes it is less time for

your pets to drive them rather than fly. Also, check with your vet兽医 to see if flying is safe

for your pet. In our situation, one of our cats has a heart condition and our vet does not

recommend flying due to the stress involved and the change in air pressure altitude.

If you are planning on moving your cats by flying them to your home, be aware that most

airlines will insist you use an IATA International Air Transport Association approved carrier

to transport your pet. The requirements of an IATA approved carrier are based on species

needs and animal size. The IATA Live Animals Regulations describe minimum standards for

carrier construction for all types of animals, ranging from insects to elephants.

Also, space for your animal should be booked a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Most

airlines have restrictions on the number of animals they carry per flight.

Only small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin with you or if the airline will not allow this

due to space limitations, your pets will be sent as special baggage in a heated and ventilated

通风的 hold. The hold provides a quiet and darkened area, which can be less stressful than

  a noisy cabin.

28.What can we know about your pets according to the second paragraph?

  A. I must be inspected before boarding,

  B. they fly with you on the same flight.

  C. They can reduce your stress with you.

  D. They should be hidden through the customs. .

29.Why should you consult your vet?

  A. To ask them to provide a document for flying

  B. Because the pets may be at risk while flying.

  C. To ask them to look after your pet.

  D. Because your cat is unfit for flying. '

  30. What should you do after having decided to move your pet by air?

  A. Get enough food and water for it.

  B. Make it take up only small place,

  C. Rent an IATA approved carrier in time. .

  D. Set up International Air Transport Association.

  31. What's the main idea of the passage?

  A. How to keep your pet safe. . B. How to deal with your pet. .

  C. How to travel with your pet. D. How to fly your pet.

  D

Sometimes life becomes a little dull. What used to be fun and different becomes boring.

That is the time to look for something new. It is the time for a big idea to get your mind off

everyday life. So why not search for extra-terrestrial 地球外的 intelligence? Or even better,

why not get your computer to do it for you?

Over two million people have joined the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence SETI

project. Based in California, the SETI project analyzes information taken from a giant radio

telescope based in South America. Its task is to look for signals from outer space that might

prove that life exists on other planets.

Processing this information is far too big a job for one computer. So the SETI project

workers pide the work among volunteers who visit their website, Each computer gets some

information to work out from the SETI network through the Internet. This process is often known

  as " meta-computing" .

It is a wonderful thought. You are sleeping, eating a meal or going out with friends. All

this time, your computer is searching the stars for signs that might show something is out there

trying to get in touch. Volunteers are proud of being involved in the SETI project. It shows that

they understand the potential of computing. They know that it is more than just a way of

  working or playing games.

Meta-computing may also be creating intelligence as well as looking for it. This idea is

based on the theory that human intelligence is created by the way in which different parts of the

brain communicate with each other. As the saying goes, "The whole is more than the sum of its

parts .”People who join the SETI project sometimes wonder whether their computer will become

part of a huge network that has learned to think for itself.

  32. According to the writer, why may meta-computing be creating intelligence?

  A. Because human beings are intelligent.

  B. Because a computer works as the brain does..

  C. Because of a network of many computers.

  D. Because of the number of computers.

33.In which part of a magazine could we probably find this passage?

  A. Science. B. Communication. C. Entertainment. D. Health.

  A. Extra-terrestrial intelligence B. Human intelligence.

  C. The SETI project. D. Meta-computing.

  35. What does the passage mainly tell us about?
